Physics expert Sterling Backus and his son created a Lamborghini Aventador SV replica using a $350 3D printer
A physicist and his son turned their basement into a supercar factory, creating a stunning Lamborghini Aventador SV replica using nothing but a basic $350 3D printer and some ingenuity.
Sterling Backus, the mastermind behind this incredible project, started by downloading a 1:10 scale model of the Aventador. What makes this story even more fascinating is his approach to overcoming the limitations of his modest 3D printer – he broke down the car’s surfaces into small square-foot sections, printing them individually and joining them together with epoxy, essentially creating a high-end automotive jigsaw puzzle.
The five-year project caught Lamborghini’s attention, leading to an unexpected twist. The luxury carmaker was so impressed that they contributed authentic parts, including the iconic Aventador headlights (valued at $5,000 each) and a steering wheel. This generous gesture added genuine Lamborghini DNA to the project.
Working with a budget of $20,000, Backus sourced additional parts from junkyards and handled all the assembly himself. The final cost came to around $35,000 – a fraction of the real Aventador’s price tag. Not stopping there, Backus has since taken on another ambitious project, restoring a McLaren 600LT using the same 3D printing techniques.
This remarkable achievement shows that with patience, creativity, and a basic 3D printer, building your dream supercar might not be as out of reach as you’d think.
