A new DIY pellet extruder kit is set to shake up the 3D printing world this weekend. The brainchild of Kristian Friesen, known online as GreenBoy3D, will be released on July 28, following its attention-grabbing debut in a March YouTube video.

This budget-friendly, lightweight device boasts compatibility with “almost any 3D printer”. The kit combines user 3D-printed parts with metal and stock components, and comes with video and text instructions for assembly and setup.

Friesen, a 23-year-old 3D printing enthusiast “GreenBoy3D” who funded the project through part-time work, claims the extruder could slash material costs by up to 90%. Pellets are typically far cheaper than filament, potentially revolutionizing the economics of 3D printing.

But that’s not all – this device opens doors to experimenting with unconventional materials like sugar and chocolate, or even recycling plastic waste (as long as it can be melted and cut into 5mm pieces). For the artistically inclined, there’s an option to color pellets using pigments, sprays, or paints.

The extruder isn’t just about savings – it packs a punch in performance too. It can achieve flow rates of “125-200 grams per hour with a 1 mm nozzle”, weighs around 700g, and can hit max temperatures of 330°C (or 420°C with an upgrade).

While the exact price remains under wraps, early birds who preorder will snag a $100 discount and extras like “premium video support”.

Curious makers can find more details on the GreenBoy3D website. As July 28 approaches, the 3D printing community waits with bated breath to see if this young inventor’s creation lives up to the hype.
