A Blackfoot home was damaged in a fire on Monday evening, caused by a laser engraver during a craft project.
The Blackfoot Fire Department arrived at the Hoff Drive property at 5 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from the owner.
The fire started when the homeowner left their laser engraver running while cutting wood, according to Blackfoot Fire Chief Bryon Howell. Upon returning, she detected the smell of smoke and discovered the equipment had caught fire.
Howell reported that the flames had reached the ceiling and were climbing up the walls rapidly.
Firefighters arrived to find flames extending from a back basement door onto a deck. They quickly brought the blaze under control, limiting the main fire damage to the room of origin and the rear of the house. However, smoke damage was reported throughout the property.
Luckily, The homeowner escaped unharmed, and no other injuries were reported.
Although this is the first laser engraver fire for Blackfoot Fire, Chief Howell used it as a reminder about fire safety:
“If you’re operating equipment like this, ensure you have a fire extinguisher nearby and working smoke detectors. Most importantly, never leave such devices running unattended,” he cautioned.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly common household tools can pose unexpected fire hazards when left unsupervised.
